White House Christmas Gift Paintings of Washington and Lincoln
White House Christmas Gift Paintings of Washington and Lincoln
Howell Gardner Crim, my paternal great grandfather, was born in Sharpsburg, Maryland, and lived from 1898 to 1959, He was a part of the White House staff from 1930 to 1957, becoming Chief Usher in 1938. The paintings were Christmas gifts given out by Dwight D. Eisenhower to the White House staff, Lincoln in 1953, and Washington in 1954. They are prints of paintings made by Eisenhower. He based the Lincoln portrait on a photograph taken by Alexander Gardner in 1863, and the Washington portrait on a painting by Gilbert Stuart. They are framed with wood from the White House itself, at the time much of the interior was being redone to modernize the building.
